As the end of our Centenary year draws near...
What an appropriate title for the final PEDAS exhibition of this momentous year - ‘PEDAS 100 Unleashed’ And unleashed it is! What a wonderful show of talent on display. It is also great to see so many more recently joined members submitting really lovely work. It’s a full, vibrant, colourful show and work is already selling! Our thanks go to Pam Marshall for holding the organisational reigns in Sally’s absence. |
|
Our last Community event over 18-20th October, ‘Aspiring Artists’, was also a great success. Everyone who participated, both adults as well as children really enjoyed getting stuck in and left with big smiles and big thankyous. The amazing support from a wide number of members (for Workshops/demos and Art Club)really made sure it went with a swing. The schools’ exhibitions of artwork were very popular and along with votes for the Art Club entries we had over 250 voting slips, which gives an indication of the footfall over a couple of days! A massive thanks for all the help and support. The photos we have shared are wonderful! |
|
Now we are gearing up for Christmas!
Please diarise the PEDAS Christmas party on Sunday 15th December at Lilliput Church Hall. Doors open at 1.30pm. Full details coming soon. As usual please bring a plate of food to share and if you wish, one significant other. However, most importantly, it will involve another famous PEDAS Panto! The title is not quite finalised, but we are already in rehearsal, and laughing all the way!! Please don’t miss this event to finish off our most successful and, hopefully, enjoyable anniversary year. Many thanks to all members Jacqui, Chair |

Note from the Chair
Dear Members
You will remember Pam Marshall recently encouraging us all to complete a registration form for Gift Aid, simply declaring that we are a UK tax payer. Well, for those who were good enough to do this, the result has been a cheque from HMRC to PEDAS for £660!
Thank you Pam for seeing this through and taking on extra work to benefit PEDAS. In addition, Pam was ably helped by Graham Chandler, so our thanks are extended to him for his time and shared experience..
This is great news for our Society and another benefit of being a charity. Its a bit like money falling off trees! As long as someone is prepared to take it upon themselves to pursue the prize, and members are prepared to commit.
In the same breath, this is an annual process. Therefore, we will be re-designing the membership renewal form in January to incorporate a tick box, allowing you to simply tick if you are tax payer.
Remember we do this all the time when we pay money to a charity and there is absolutely no come back.
The evidence is there, so please, if you are a tax payer, please help your Society in January, by ticking the box.

ART in the TEA ROOMS
It is long overdue time to refresh the Art in the Tea Rooms at Upton Country Park. These can be offered for sale but they are there also to draw attention to the gallery. There are appropriate spaces for three paintings at the moment, so if you would like to exhibit your work, please read on.
For safety reasons, the work must be on unframed canvas or in light coloured frames with NO GLASS.
Very approximate dimensions to be as follows, no smaller please!:
1) Landscape: 34 ins x up to 24 ins
2) Portrait: 20 ins x16 ins.
3) Portrait: 30 ins x 24 ins
The paintings can be of any subject (family friendly of course) and will be hung in a "first come first served" order, according to the appropriate spaces. Others to be held over till changeover. Please do not apply this time if you have already exhibited in the Tea Rooms.
Hanging will be by means of a tightly strung cord attached to D rings. As they will not be screwed to the wall we cannot guarantee their security from theft.
The paintings will be changed over at roughly two monthly intervals unless sold before (or more likely when I get round to it!).
If you wish to take part please email a photograph of your work with dimensions, including frame, details and price, to Liz at lizziemagee4@gmail.com.

A Gallery in Time, What Future for the Gallery Upstairs?
Just last week, I attended the funeral of my friend Charlie Sheldrick. He was a very special human being who brought comfort and a feeling of safety to many vulnerable people and joy to his many friends through his generosity, enthusiasm, fun and his constantly positive spirit. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
But what has Charlie Sheldrick got to do with PEDAS and The Study Gallery, I hear you ask? Well, back in 2006, when Charlie managed the “Social Care” team at Poole Council, he was responsible for running the Tea Rooms and the room above. It was a gallery then but the Council couldn’t make it work and Charlie asked PEDAS if they’d like to take it on as a Community Gallery. Of course we said yes and we arranged an informal agreement for us to take it on …..and the rest is history.
Well, not quite, as the Gallery is in need of your help again at this stage in time. You see, 4 of the 5 people who run the Gallery have been doing it since 2006 and if I said they are all near 80, I wouldn’t be far wrong. If we want to see the Gallery to continue for another 20 years or more, we really need to find more Members willing to help run it.
Can you imagine how different things would be if we didn’t have a gallery in which to exhibit every year? And think about the rest of the local art community!
So what we’d really like is for a couple of Members to come forward to “shadow” some of the jobs, with a view to taking over when the time comes. This would mean attending our bi-monthly meetings and sharing some of the things that need to be done, like, welcoming new exhibitors, taking bookings, sending out information etc..
We’ll put the next meeting Agenda on PEDAS Weekly and invite you along.
If you want to talk it over, please ring me on 07934386753.
John Biggs
Note from the Chair
What does the Future hold?
On a serious note…
We have had a very successful and enjoyable Centenary year with its activities and events, along with excellent publicity. Events such as the Lighthouse exhibition have enhanced our reputation and standing within the local art community and the public generally. We need to sustain the success of PEDAS going forward.
You will have seen my letter to members in our weekly e-bulletin 3 weeks ago about the Future of PEDAS and how important it is to have a regular flow of volunteers who are willing to step up and support their Art Society by offering to sit on the Committee for a couple of years. PEDAS is entirely a voluntary organisation and exists only through the participation and engagement of its members.
Separately now, you have the same ‘cri de coeur’ from John Biggs specifically about the future of the Gallery. The GUS Committee is a sub-committee of PEDAS and there is a link co-ordinator who heads up the Gallery team and sits on the main PEDAS Committee.
That has been John for many years and he wishes to step down. Others on the GUS Committee have been serving PEDAS and the Gallery for many, many years!
In addition, you will have seen the news from CAD Arts last week in PEDAS Weekly. They are having to fold.
I quote from their article, words which I could have written myself, namely:
Over the past 2 years we have lost three Trustees with no sign of anyone wishing to commit to filling those positions. Combined with the desire for present Trustees, who had served in some cases, for more than twenty years, also wanting to resign, it was not difficult to reach the decision to close.
They entitled the article, ‘The end of an era’.
Are you getting the message? Is this loud and clear?.
As with CAD Arts, several of our Committee members, now Trustees, have served on the Committee for many years and not surprisingly wish to step down and pass their role over to someone else.
In the last article, we invited members to speak to existing committee members to gain an insight into what it is like to be a PEDAS Committee member, and/or to contact me with queries, comments or offers. None of us have heard from any of our 90 members.
By the end of the year, in preparation for the next AGM in March 2025 we have some hard decisions to make.
Thus, between now and December we need to know if we will have a Committee for next year.
Will you help to ensure the future of PEDAS?

Cri de Coeur from Abi Kremer:
Hi all, Hope you are well.
Just to say that there is an opportunity to draw and paint from the model that is at risk due to low numbers. Our wonderful models will lose their employment and these absorbing creative classes will cease to exist. I do realise the costs have changed this year, but the funding source has now changed for Skills and Learning. On the bright side the Portrait class at Kings Park only needs two students to be viable - here is a link: Portrait Painting with a Life Model for Beginners - Skills & Learning Adult Community Education (skillsandlearningace.com)
It begins on Friday 20th September and runs for 10 weeks 7 - 9 - hope to see you there (please enrol on or before Thursday 12th September)
The Life class has a steeper hill to climb for viability, but is an opportunity not to be missed to develop your expressive creativity and stretch your observational skills. This happens in the purpose built life room at the Dolphin Poole on a Monday evening 6.30 - 9.00pm - a real treat. Here is a link: Life Drawing for Pleasure - Skills & Learning Adult Community Education (skillsandlearningace.com)
It begins on Monday 23rd September, please enrol by Friday 13th September (there is an instalment plan) Hope you can make it.
Best wishes, Abi.

Beach Hut Murals
Message received through Facebook
Hello,
I am making contact to let you know of a possible opportunity that your members may be interested in. I am currently seeking Arts Council England funding for a project to revitalise some beach huts with murals. I am looking for an artist with a strong connection to Hamworthy (e.g. must have lived/lives there, works/volunteers there, or leisures there), who would be able to provide mentoring and on-the-ground support to aspiring artists from the community. Plus, there is the possibility of this lead artist painting one of the murals themselves. I would be grateful if you could make your members aware - thank you. Interested members may contact me directly on 07932 352969 (WhatsApp preferred).

Cancellation of PEDAS Holiday 2024
It is with regret I have to inform the members that we have had to cancel our holiday to Canterbury and Hastings this year due to lack of support. Unfortunately with so few people electing to join us on the trip the price became too expensive and the single supplement exorbitant. We need to have a rethink on our holidays as it has become increasingly difficult to get a group together. The more people we get the cheaper it is eg if we had 50 people the cost would be around £350, but with only 17 it was around £650, this is a massive difference.
Please let myself and John know your thoughts on us continuing with our annual holiday so we can move forward to next year.
Kind regards,
Carole Gadsby

Thank you for funds raised
We'd like to say 'thank you' to all PEDAS members who came to Dean's Court and helped to raise £108 for the Museum of East Dorset. We had 27 artists who came along from the two art clubs, Broadstone and PEDAS, even though it was a cloudy day with some drizzle at the start.
Best wishes, Gill Mullen

News from the wider Arts Community
Message from CADArts regarding their forthcoming AGM
(PEDAS is a group member of CADArts)
The A.G.M this year is important to all members, as there will be major changes in the future of CADArts. The Trustees have recommended that the Charity be closed. We feel that CADArts is no longer required as originally constituted.
Certain projects are to continue. A new group will take the Living Crafts forward in the Priory bi-annually and be open to all. A Newsletter will be produced for all who wish to receive It and an on-line Arts Directory is to be available to all artists.
The CADArts A.G.M will take place on Saturday 3rd August from 4pm to 7pm, weather permitting we may be able to enjoy the gardens. Please join with us to make this a special evening with Refreshments and musical entertainment.
We would like to see as many of our members as possible to celebrate past achievements and thank those who have played a part in CADArts history.

I was there one morning this week and had about 20 very interested visitors. Unfortunately there have been a few closed days due to events at Lighthouse, so look at their website before you go. Opening of the PEDAS 100 Exhibition at Lighthouse was a triumph!
If you weren’t there at Lighthouse last Saturday lunchtime, you missed a treat. The Launch Party for our 100th Anniversary Exhibition went really well. Both Galleries were full of people, the exhibition looked fantastic and the Mayor and Mayoress were full of praise. They even talked about purchases!
Thanks to all who took part, either submitting pieces for selection or part of the production team. I was really impressed with the result and it MUST be seen. It is open most days when the Lighthouse is open (closed Sundays & Mondays) and stays open until 7 or 8 in the evening. And it’s on until 27th July.
There are a few tweaks to be made as we learn how things work at Lighthouse. We’ve installed a Visitors’ Book and we are working on a catalogue that will list all the exhibits. We hope you can all have one of those.
There is one request though, that would really help the exhibition and how we communicate with people outside our club that visit the exhibition. Lighthouse say there is no need for stewarding, but it is always better if there is someone on hand at an exhibition to chat to visitors and explain about Poole and East Dorset Art Society.
So, I am asking if all of you, our Members, would kindly set aside a few hours during the exhibition to go along and spend time in the galleries, talking to visitors about the work, about the club and what we do.
I appreciate it’s quite a big ask but it would be a great service to our club and you’d get to spend time up close and intimate with some fantastic art that is rarely seen in public.
Thank you. John Biggs

P E D A S Art Tours
Sussex, Kent: Hastings, Folkestone, Margate and Canterbury
Wednesday 02 October to Sunday 06 October 2024 (4 nights) £200 per person deposit
Sorry for the delay in getting the information to everyone, it has been difficult getting hotel availability in the places we want to visit. However, we would like to ascertain exactly how many people we have and the variety of rooms we will be needing. It is incredibly difficult getting single rooms without being double the price so where possible please try and share. Presently we do not have a hotel but I will advise at a later date. We are looking for somewhere central with restaurants close by or Bed Breakfast and Evening meal.
This is the itinerary at present, but it is subject to change:
Day 1 – Petworth House or Tudely Church near Tunbridge Wells for the Chagall windows
Day 2 – Margate, The Turner Gallery or a day in Canterbury painting and seeing the sights
Day 3 – Folkestone – tour of the sculptures from previous Triennials
Day 4 - Jerwood Gallery, Hastings and the De La Warr Pavilion Gallery, Bexhill on Sea,
Day 5 – Return via Charleston Farmhouse, home of the Bloomsbury Group
We will have the coach at our disposal whatever we decide and all places are a maximum of one hour from where we have our base.
We envisage the cost around £600, possibly less for people sharing. We ideally need about 30 people and should we not get that, your deposit will be refunded. Also until accommodation is confirmed it is also refundable.
Please complete the form CLICK HERE and let me have this and payment by Monday 17 July 2024.
