PEDAS Weekly
week commencing 13th January 2025
A reminder of this week's
Wednesday Afternoon Session Time: 2 pm - 4 pm Alderney Manor Community Centre, 287 Herbert Avenue BH12 4HT. Please allow travel time for the roadworks nearby. 15th January - Tom Marshall - Exploring Drawing II: More Techniques for Fluent Drawing Suitable for any level of experience/ skill. We will be using a range of media- water-based or dry. Aims: The aim is to EXPLORE- different materials and techniques- some very familiar, and some less so- rather than trying to produce one single finished piece, though if anyone wants to, they are welcome to do that. The hope is that everyone will take home ideas they can put into practice in their own painting and drawing, without necessarily going out and buying a load of new kit. |
Content:
This is more like a buffet than a set menu. That might mean trying lots of different dishes/ materials. It might mean that you pile your plate high with something that you are really keen on- ie, concentrating on just one of the possibilities. These options will include different ways of using dip pens, line and wash, highlights and pastels on washes, work with watercolour, pastels, pencil, penwork, work in light on dark, and in a combination of both light and dark on a mid-toned surface, etc.
For those who have been to either of the previous sessions that I led, there will be plenty of new things, but also the chance to revisit and extend some of what we looked at before, for anyone who would like to do this. To those who were not at these, there will be the opportunity to look at some of those techniques, as well. It means that there will be multiple options and the opportunity to try out different materials and techniques that relate to drawing and painting.
Format:
So, I will do a brief demo of several techniques- you will all then be able to select materials and choose those that you are interested in using. As you make artwork, I will aim to give some help those who want it. We then regroup, look at another couple of techniques, and you will be free to try these. I will be flexible, but would think that we will do the cycle of demo-then-making 3 times in total, and at the end of the session, we will briefly regroup and I will give you ideas how to extend some of these methods further, as many of them lead naturally into other things.
Materials to Bring:
I will bring the materials that you are likely to need. You don't need to bring any. However, the following would be useful:
Drawings that you would like to work from/on, or/and items that you would like to draw. These might include reference drawings, or ones in pen or pencil that you would like to do washes on. I like to work from life, and will bring some items to draw, and I will help those who wish to to get into groups to draw each other. You may like to work from your imagination or use drawings you already have to refer to. I almost never work from photographs, if I can help it, but you aren't me, and may wish to do so, though I will suggest how you might do so. You may like to bring your own items to draw, including mirrors, if you fancy doing a self-portrait, etc. The lighting there can be very poor, for anyone wishing to pick up light and shadow, so you may wish to bring a battery-powered lamp?
Here are some useful things, but remember, I will be bringing some, too:
Brushes, if you have them. I usually use one large brush and a medium small one.
Watercolours/ inks
A pencil or 2 would be useful
Unison pastels, if you have them. These are ridiculously expensive, but large, made in England, and you can do a lot with them: they tend not to crumble to pieces, or to dissolve accidentally if wet. They are available at Forest Stationers, New Milton; Artcetera, Boscombe, and Herrings in Dorchester, or online. I will be bringing some.
Charcoal or black conte crayons or that kind of thing
Any white dry or water-based materials- e.g. pencil, pastel, watercolour.

If you have severe asthma and wish to use pastels/charcoal very messily, you may want to bring a dust mask.
Feel free to bring your own paper- I will be providing what you should need, anyway, but if you want to bring your own, I always suggest A4 or larger, and ideally good quality watercolour paper. My personal choice is usually Hot-Pressed (HP)- which gives a smooth surface- Bockingford or Waterford, and at least 300gm/m2, which is 140lb. This is expensive stuff, but if I draw on this, it always gives me the option of adding a wash or painting properly on it, later on, without it falling to pieces or bobbling wildly, and this, as well as giving you the option to do washes, means that even if you make mistakes and produce something you aren't happy with, you don't have to waste the paper. It also means that if I produce a nice piece whilst out drawing, I can frame it up to exhibit :) If you have Ingres or other coloured pastel papers, you are welcome to bring these, too. Tom |

week commencing 6th January 2025
A reminder of this week's
Wednesday Afternoon Session Time: 2 pm - 4 pm Alderney Manor Community Centre, 287 Herbert Avenue BH12 4HT 8th January 2025 - 'Colour me in' with Barry Kavanagh Barry shows us that tonal value is more important than colour by setting us an interesting challenge. Bring materials/paints of your choice. Recent additional information: Members please bring a pencil and watercolour paper taped down. Also please note Ringwood Road is closed at the Mountbatten Arms roundabout so it may take longer for members to get to Herbert Avenue. |
Following our Centenary year, which was packed with different events and activities, 2025 will be less celebratory, but will still offer our members a range of artistic activities and opportunities both within PEDAS and beyond. The first activity of the New Year is the request to renew your annual membership.
As part of this e-bulletin, for your convenience you will find a new on-line form below, which is simple to complete and submit and avoids the physical printing out and getting it by post or by hand to the membership secretary. However, this remains an alternative, so do not worry, details on the form.
Because we are now registered for and benefitting from Gift Aid, the required form will be an integral part of renewals in future. If you are a taxpayer, your simple tick will benefit your society significantly financially. Please participate.
You may remember that at the last AGM, we voted on a proviso to increase the subs, should it be needed. Well, we have successfully funded all our Centenary activities and still remain firmly in the black, and we are not anticipating a jump in our expenses during this coming year. As a result of these calculations, we are holding the subs at £35 for another year. I trust you agree that membership of PEDAS as an active and participative art society, offers excellent value for money. To say nothing of having our own art gallery. Please continue to support PEDAS as our member subscriptions are our only significant source of income.
Below, I highlight some plans for PEDAS activities for 2025 and beyond:
Big names in the local art scene as guest tutors at our Wednesday and Sunday sessions
Our Spring exhibition ‘Creative Perspectives’, based on our current project being led by Helen Talbot.
A PEDAS quiz – returning by popular demand!
A visit to the Mall Galleries in London in Spring.
An invitation to PEDAS to participate in the 85th Anniversary celebrations of Dunkirk being held at the Lighthouse by the Poole Maritime Trust
Looking to 2026, we are working with Poole Museum to celebrate their re-opening with an exhibition involving PEDAS.
Our summer En Plein Air 2025 programme is on the drawing board!
Finally, a reminder that our AGM will be held on Sunday 2nd March. If you would like to stand as a Committee member, or table any agenda items, please contact a Committee member.
All the best to each and every one of you as we start 2025!
Jacqui

Christmas party Tombola proceeds
We secured £100 from the Tombola on 15th December. This has been given to Waste Not Want Not charity in Poole High Street and we have received a thankyou from Leanne Miller from the WNWN Charity. In addition, we received donations for the art materials and books to the tune of £40. This has not stayed within PEDAS to offset expenses but has been included in our donation to the charity, making a total of £140. |
PEDAS Holidays
We have enjoyed a wonderful tradition of PEDAS holidays over many years. Thanks to the time and efforts of particularly John Biggs and Carole Gadsby, we have travelled to a wide range of different places, both within the UK and abroad in search of seeing and experiencing great art. However, in recent years, for some reason, support for these excellent short trips away has dwindled? This has made booking accommodation and transport much more challenging for Carole, and more than one trip recently has had to be cancelled. As a result, the organisers have sadly decided to call a halt to these holidays. There will be no more PEDAS holidays away, unless someone else would be willing to take this on. However, we will continue to organise day trips to key exhibitions in London and elsewhere and Carole has kindly agreed to continue to manage these. We will be returning to the Mall Galleries in London for the Watercolour exhibition. Details to follow. On behalf of everyone at PEDAS, I would like to thank both Carole and John for the time and effort they have put in over the many years to designing and managing this highlight of the PEDAS calendar. As well as a contribution to the food ‘banquet’, we ask you to support a Tombola which we will be running, with proceeds to charity. We have selected, ‘Waste Not Want Not’, a local food charity in Poole High Street supporting poverty in Poole. We donated our proceeds from our Art Auction a couple of years ago to them, and they are a very deserving cause. Preferably a bottle or chocolates, thankyou. We will also have a small table of largely unused art materials, which can be yours for a donation. This money will stay within PEDAS in order to offset some of the expenses we have incurred buying materials for events. So, a bit of small change will be useful. PEDAS will be supplying drinks next Sunday. Doors open at 1.30pm See you there! |

The end of a very significant year for PEDAS
A few words from the Chair
As 2024 rolls rapidly to its conclusion, I invite you all to reflect on the activities and events that made this milestone year for our Society.
We held a Centenary dinner in April, which brought together over 80 members and many partners. I trust you will agree that this was a most enjoyable and memorable occasion at the Miramar hotel.
Over the year, we have held three well publicised and significant art exhibitions, all of which were well supported and gave excellent exposure to the work of our member artists. It has been great to see so many newer members exhibiting. Most significant of the three was, of course our five week Centenary exhibition held at the Lighthouse in Poole. This once in a lifetime exhibition was extremely well received, opened by the Mayor, and we gained significant exposure and kudos as a long standing and highly respected Art Society of Poole and East Dorset.
In addition to our public exhibitions and member events and activities, we also held two important events for the community; Art in the Park in June and Aspiring Artists in October. Both were well received and supported, and again brought PEDAS to the attention of our public. It is amazing to see so many adults and children, who are actively engaged in art, come out of the woodwork at these events!
Looking to the future, as a souvenir of this year, you will remember that we decided against producing a book and instead we intend to produce a seven minute video, which will showcase the history, people and activities of PEDAS in visual form. We have brought together a wealth of material which illustrates all this. We intend to spend the next 3 months getting the final product together as a memento of the year.
In support of our Centenary showcase, a team has worked hard over time, sorting through all our Archival materials and we now retain an Archivist.
I have not thanked anyone by name. I trust that through communication with members over the year and reporting on each event, they have already been recognised. Countless members actively supported this year’s programme of activities, so this is a massive thankyou to everyone who has helped to make this a very special year for everyone. Our society has no identity beyond its individual members, and each one of you makes up the Poole & East Dorset Art Society!
As well as our members, we gained the willing participation of so many external people, and the help and cooperation of many others, including the commercial sponsorship we managed to secure to support key events. Our gratitude must extend beyond our own boundaries.
So, it looks like we have a lot to celebrate at the Christmas party this year!
I look forward to sharing a joyful time with all of you, and we will definitely raise our glasses to toast each other in celebration and gratitude to this amazing year!

Free offer from Malcolm Barents
Hi, Free offer - I have a Photo canvas with photo image on (image on frame sides as well), size approx 36"x48" and wondered if it would be any good for any members to use for painting over - would like to give it a second life rather than going to landfill. It has a water drip mark on the top portion. Would need collecting from Lower Parkstone. Please reply to email

Message from CADARTs
As you are aware CADArts is folding in 2025, but we are pleased to let you know that the arts in the area will still be promoted.
Stephen Docherty is in the process of setting up a website - ARTS BCP. He is also collaborating with Cadarts regarding the Newsletter and we hope to send out the first of these early in December.
We envisage that this is something which will grow with a wider audience and offer the local community a good insight into the arts in the area. In the meantime I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year.
Kind regards
Brenda (Cadarts)

Review of 'PEDAS100: Unleashed'
I'm happy to report that this was a successful exhibition, with some lovely artwork on show. We had lots of positive feedback from visitors. I have been comparing past Autumn exhibitions and Unleashed was the most successful for sales since before the Covid lockdown. So maybe buyers are coming back! Many thanks to those who helped and all who took part. Pam Marshall, Treasurer / Organiser. |
