Stencils from Nature
  • Draw a selection of leaves and cones or acorns or a climbing plant. Make your drawing clear and simple. You could draw around actual leaves. Make some colour notes.
  • Decide how you might use the designs. I painted a cupboard using oils, I used fabric paint for applique stitched on the edges of a mat and stencilled a wall using emulsion. It would be good to paint a box for which acrylic would be suitable.
  • I cut stencils from cereal packets. A stencil requires some planning to allow for the joins required to hold the stencil together, and one for each colour. For the cones I made a darker main shape then small highlights on top. You can adjust the design to suit the shape of your object.

Kitchen Items Composition
  • Take 4 small pieces of paper.. about 6in sq.
  • On each one quickly ( max 5 mins) draw/paint something in your kitchen in its surroundings.. fill the paper, the surrounding items may spill over the edges, be cut off.
  • Take your 4 images, enjoy them.
  • Now use these 4 scenarios to feed into a larger painting/drawing. Use all 4 original items, Try changing the scale make one or more ( smaller or larger). Try overlapping. Change orientation Use the shapes etc to create a work specific to your home. But it isn’t a view of the room.
