Chair's note
The PEDAS Centenary is proving to be a very active, exciting and enjoyable year!
Did you read last week’s PEDAS Weekly about the success of our DAW exhibition Celebrate! Thankyou to everyone who participated and congratulations to those who sold during what was a very successful exhibition. I had only limited chances to visit DAW venues, but several were bemoaning the lack of visitors and sales. Our results do not echo that!
The member’s cream tea event was a great opportunity for those who ventured across the water. An insight was gained into the JLP holiday property which is the Castle and its grounds, as well as the opportunity to spend some time on the famous Brownsea Island. Relaxed time in each other’s company was enjoyed, while also having the opportunity for some en plein air art. We did not choose the best day weather-wise but I do not think that spoilt this one off opportunity.

Now, the Lighthouse exhibition has been launched and what an exhibition it is!! Full marks to the organising team led by John Biggs, and of course they would not have been able to achieve this without the help and participation of so many others; current members, past members and non-members, who all willingly engaged in helping to track down and borrow precious paintings, timely ripped from owners’ walls. As a result, we have been able to offer a representation of the illustrious history of this long standing and highly acclaimed Dorset art society! We should all be proud of what has been achieved. It is an historical milestone for PEDAS and will never occur again, I will wager! Our thanks to the selectors, Frances Hatch and Martha Earley who did a great job in their inclusion of a wide range of work by current members both new and old.
The launch party was very successful. As well as the presence of the Mayor and his wife, seeing many past members with the opportunity to catch up was also precious. It really brought the ‘club’ together and strengthened our ties. The Mayoral couple were truly impressed with the quality of work on display and they stayed chatting for a long time. |

Lastly, the next event!!
The coming weekend brings our community event in Upton Country Park, ‘Art in the Park’. Again this demonstrates the reputation and standing of our society:

Celebrate!
A review by Helen It was an honour to be present at the opening of ‘Celebrate!’ and to see the wonderful and diverse work that was on display. Having set the project a few months ago with a brainstorming session, the topic was interpreted individually and imaginatively, evolving into a celebration of art and creativity of the Poole and East Dorset Art Society in their centenary year, an amazing achievement and one that must be congratulated. It is without a doubt that the celebration was the collaboration of skills and artistry and the coming together of the spirit of the society, its individuals and the pride that everyone felt on the day to exhibit their work, one that has endured 100 years. All the hard work of the organisers and artists involved, demonstrated the strong foundations of the society, one that has a firm grounding for the continuation of the group that will support the future artists who will be proud to be members. It was a great sadness that Denis had passed away a few weeks before, his own centenary year, but I am sure he was there in spirit with a twinkle in his eye and filled with pride for his friends and colleagues. Well done everyone, and I look forward to your next venture, one that will be equally as exciting. Helen |
Some figures for 'Celebrate!' from Pam, our Treasurer...
We had 1564 visitors, we took £1525 on the sale of 19 artworks, and £405 on greetings cards. 101 framed works were entered, 48 Browser pieces entered, and 7 3D works were entered. Commission at 15% = £228.75, of which £152,5 goes to the Gallery Upstairs (10%). The Dorset Art Weeks exhibition in 2022 (the last one), artworks made £1190, so in comparison this was a very good exhibition. |

- Excellent prizes sponsored by Daler-Rowney.
- Everyone is welcome, however we are placing less emphasis on children this time to make it more of an adult event with hopefully some good artwork to exhibit.
- Free up the dates and come along and join in! It’s a sad reflection that we have had more artists from other societies than PEDAS members participating in the past. It should be a fun weekend!
- Spread the word and help us with publicity. Bring along friends and family.
- We will need some help with stewarding this event. We would be grateful for your offers to help. One half day session on either the Saturday or Sunday would be really helpful, otherwise it can’t run.

21st June to 27th July, 2024 (collecting work on 29th) “Poole and East Dorset Art Society: 1924 to today” Great response from Members Thanks to all Members who sent in nominations for the Lighthouse exhibition. Our selectors are currently sifting through over 200 photos of art works sent in by you. As well as your own best paintings and sculptures, you tracked down some fascinating pieces. We have a huge range of works from the last 40 years of PEDAS, some of which have never been seen and some we haven’t laid eyes on for decades. I have no doubt the judges will have a hard time deciding. They have been asked to select 45 pieces for the ground floor gallery and around 75 for the top floor. We should know the result by Friday 31st May and we will let you know by email, as soon as possible after that. Only selected items will be informed. If you do not get an email, I’m afraid yours were not selected. John Biggs |

Just a heads up for 'Celebrate', our next PEDAS exhibition at the Gallery Upstairs, as part of Dorset Art Week. For full details and Entry Form Click Here Hand-in is Wednesday 22nd May. The launch party will be on Saturday 25th May from 11am and we will have the Leader of the BCP Council, Vikki Slade to formally open the exhibition. On this its 100th anniversary, PEDAS celebrates the artists and achievements of your historic Art Society; a highlight of our centenary festivities is this exhibition. The idea of ‘Celebrate!’ is that it should be a vibrant, lively reflection of the club, its people and the locality. For it, Helen suggested members might wish to research art movements from the past 100 years. Still struggling for ideas? See projects page for Helen's suggestions You will see notes there on creating an Artist's Book and keeping a sketchbook. We would love to show some of your Artist's sketchbooks that celebrate our society and location. Help! We need volunteers to help with hanging the exhibition on Thursday 23rd from approx. 10 am – 12.30. If you are able to help it would be greatly appreciated - please contact publicity@pedas.org.uk |

Message from the Chair
Our Centenary year was launched with a bang last night! A full evening was enjoyed by all and the Miramar did us proud. We enjoyed lively music from a group of singers, who were very enthusiastic and utterly professional in their rendition. Our speaker, Roger Zogolovitch, reminded us never to underrate amateur creativity and the joy of being immersed in original and personal creative endeavour, with no judgement. He described amateur work as analogue in the face of the mass digital world. Having informed members of Dennis Hill’s recent passing it was wonderful that his daughter Sue, along with his 2 friends, the Richardsons, who had originally booked, were still willing and able to attend, and his godson took Dennis’s place. Roger Zogolovitch's has kindly given us a copy of his talk.
"I stand before you ‘dazed and confused’ – I am an architect and developer – I make buildings – what could I possibly add to your 100th year anniversary – I ask ? I could say that its my own fault when I labelled my activity ‘Development as Art’ – your president John Biggs jumped at that and thought I would have something to say at this momentous celebration of your society’s 100 year anniversary. I am honoured to be part of your celebration What a splendid occasion, we have all enjoyed. The ambiance and atmosphere of this perfect dinner event. For me as an amateur – I like to say ‘Sunday’ painter, as I sit and make drawings and paintings of restaurant tables when travelling – only because ‘I am greedy and get frustrated with the wait’. DENNIS HILL
Dennis joined PEDAS in the early 1960s and became a key member of the club, serving as Treasurer for some years. We all knew him as a very generous, gifted and prolific artist. Born in 1924, we were intending to celebrate both the club’s centenary and his own 100th birthday. Dennis described his early years: “When I was seven, I started reading avidly any book or magazine on painting I could lay my hands on. I came across the magazine called The Studio which must have been the forerunner of The Artist. Continue reading |

During our time together, we'll explore the art of using sketchbooks and drawing imagery directly onto watercolour paper to create vibrant and dynamic artworks. In my teaching career, I've noticed that many individuals struggle with working from sketchbook imagery. While some may prefer using secondary sources like photographs or digital imagery, I've found that relying solely on these methods can inhibit spontaneity and the flow of creativity. Read more... |
Message from Pat regarding help with Lighthouse submissions
Hi Folks,
It has come to our notice that some Society members are unsure about submitting work on line for possible selection for the Lighthouse exhibition.
To help with this, Linda Honeyborne has kindly agreed to assist on FRIDAY 3rd MAY, 2-4pm (Note date change!) at my house in Lilliput.
You would need to bring your art work for photographing and the necessary information to complete the submission form/s.
Since we are unsure how many people might take advantage of this could you email me or phone by return if you are interested.
Click here for Pat's address and contact details.
No doubt we will all get into the 21st century sooner or later!!
Tea, coffee, biscuits, cake will be available as there may be a bit of sitting around depending on the take up!!!

Dear Members,
You will now have heard that we will be transferring our Dinner on Friday 19th April to the Miramar Hotel in Bournemouth. As most of you will know, this is a delightful hotel of a superior standard. The only difference we ask of attendees is that they travel to Bournemouth for this function instead of Poole. Everything else remains the same, including your dinner choices. Address Miramar Hotel East Overcliff DRive Bournemouth BH1 3AL There is plenty of parking at the hotel. If this change seriously inconveniences anyone, please contact Carole Gadsby. However, we trust this change will suit everyone, as it is a lovely venue and we have been very lucky. I would like to thank Carole Gadsby for her help in securing this fantastic deal after such an unexpected shock Jacqui Gush Chair |

Hi all, I had a call from Upton Community Centre. They are holding a flower show in August and are looking for someone to judge the art competition. Can anyone take this on? It is just local people's work and will need to be judged at 10 am on 17th August. No requirement to turn up for prize giving.

It was good to catch up with many members at the AGM recently. Thankyou to those who attended. Apart from the important business of an AGM, which on this occasion was pretty straightforward, it was a great opportunity to share research that has been undertaken about the history of our Society over a 100 year period. Thank you to John Biggs and David Marshall for presenting this. What an excellent way to set the scene for the rest of this year! If you missed it, see our history page on the website:
https://pedas.org.uk/history.html We are still hoping to follow this up with our Centenary Dinner on the 19th April. At the time of writing, we know that this will not now be at the Poole Quay hotel, but 4 days after the shock announcement, an alternative venue on that date cannot be confirmed. We apologise for this unsettling situation so close to the event. Watch for imminent updates. Let us hope this does not set the scene for other celebratory events during the year! I trust we are all now preparing submissions for our two forthcoming Centenary art exhibitions, either by producing something new and exciting for ‘Celebrate’ and/or the Lighthouse, or dusting down previous work to submit to the Lighthouse as one of ‘our best’! We also need everyone to help in securing work from past artists. John’s team is on the case, but they need the cooperation from all members. Do you have original work from a past, or present, PEDAS member hanging on your wall, which you would like to nominate to hang in the Lighthouse for this prestigious exhibition? The forms for these submissions will soon be published in PEDAS Weekly. |
Bookings for our Cream Tea event at Brownsea on 13th June are now open. Forms were published via PEDAS Weekly recently. Remember numbers are limited to 50.
Following the AGM we have a few changes to the Trustees and their roles. Sue Huskinson has stepped down and we thank Sue for everything she so efficiently and proactively achieved as Secretary for 2 years. Carol Cox has taken this role now and we welcome Freda Rhodes as membership secretary, taking over from Carol. Thank you to both Freda and Carol. Have you helped PEDAS by completing a Gift Aid form? As we are a charity we can gain financially at NO cost to yourself as a taxpaying member. Contact Pam Marshall if you have overlooked this small action. Lastly, as the northern hemisphere turns on its axis towards the sun, we hope for more sun and warmth as Spring gathers force. With Easter and British Summer Time around the corner, we can turn our attention to our summer programme which commences in May, not long now! Meanwhile, keep an eye open for up to date information on changes, bookings and activities. Warm wishes to all members for a very enjoyable Easter with family, friends or just your garden and/or your paints! May the weather be with you. Best Wishes Jacqui Gush |

Message from Norma about Pedas Centenary Video
Advice for would be documenters of workshops etc: Please note we are celebrating our centenary and in turn celebrating our members and what we are about, what we are doing. We want to make our video appealing exciting interesting. With that in mind videos and photographs of members working , creating, interacting, rather than just pics of members or tutors. Please date all video and photos with your name. Type of workshop etc. Send to normarawlings11@gmail.com or my Facebook messenger or WhatsApp Norma Jacqueline Rawlings on fb WhatsApp is 07488233828. The final exhibition will be selected independently. So, you could nominate your own favourite paintings (or sculpture). New tri-fold leaflets to promote the Gallery Upstairs
We all see, and pick up promotional leaflets for local visitor attractions when we are out and about visiting pubs or hotels , galleries, community centres or other visitor attractions in a different area. We thought, why are we not using this method to promote our own Gallery, which is a visitor attraction in our area of Dorset? So we are joining in. We have just taken receipt of double sided tri-fold full colour leaflets which advertise our Gallery in Upton Country Park. Just in time for the new tourist season, we now have a lot of leaflets to distribute appropriately, and would appreciate your help. We are drawing up a list of venues and areas/suburbs and if we know you live in that area, we will be asking you to participate. If you live close to a popular destination for visitors, perhaps you could offer to take a few leaflets along and ask if these could be displayed. We also have perspex leaflet holders that can be used where necessary. We see this as a positive step forward to increase awareness of and interest in the Gallery and its exhibitions, in the context of the lovely Upton Park. Please let us know if you are able and willing to help, and we can have a chat about the venues around you and the opportunities they may offer. Many thanks, Jacqui Gush |

Wednesday afternoon session Alderney Manor Community Centre, 287 Herbert Ave, BH12 4HT Time: 2 pm - 4 pm 28 February - Tom Marshall. Ways of Drawing For the first half we'll focus on quick drawings in white on dark paper. Tom will show the 3 main approaches on to how to draw light on dark. For the second half, we'll be drawing using wire- making small (roughly hand-sized at the most) line sculptures. Some of that can be drawing from one's head, but people may like to bring drawings of people, birds or dogs as reference material. The wire work will only involve twisting by hand - no soldering, etc. Tom has copper, brass and stainless steel wire of various gauges. Everyone will be free to take their pieces home with them - but please remember that it's very important that these are not left in reach of small children or pets. Tom will provide all the drawing gear, although anyone wishing to paint as well as draw in light on dark may like to bring a decent watercolour brush, and if anyone has any white paint, pencils, etc, that sit around and never get used, feel free to bring them along and we can look at them. If anyone wants to do wire work on a larger scale, remember that it will only be the second half, and you'll need to bring your own wire. Tom will also bring some mounted pieces and postcards for sale. (An additional useful thing would be desk lights or table lamps if safe to use) |

Message from Liz about Blossom Festival, Kingston Lacy
I have been in contact with staff at Kingston Lacy to discuss submitting work to their Blossom Festival, more info given below. The essence of this is that if you would like to submit an artwork which could be printed on small cards (85 x 55 mm) to put into their travelling vending machine, please email me lizziemagee4@gmail.com to express your interest.
The work would be a celebration of blossom influenced by some poetry which has been specially written by Simon Armitage. The deadline for submission is 11th March, and work would be selected for inclusion by National Trust representatives.

Wednesday afternoon session Alderney Manor Community Centre, 287 Herbert Ave, BH12 4HT Time: 2 pm - 4 pm 14 February - Freda Rhodes, 'Synaesthesia Part II' Freda says: "Thanks so much to everyone for your enthusiasm last week! I'm really looking forward to seeing what has become of your sketches. I've already seen some more finished work and I'm truly impressed. This week we'll start with a short recap for those who missed the first session and then spend a little time sharing experiences and showing any work that you bring along. Then I have another beautiful piece of music for you to be inspired by. Having done a couple of sketches and thought about how to develop them, those who want to can start on a more finished piece. Please bring appropriate paper, canvas or board and the colour medium of your choice. I'll bring pastels for sketching for those who need a larger array of colours." (The painting shown here is just an example. It's not the music we'll be listening to this time.) |
Message from Barbara Woods
I’ve just been to an interesting exhibition at the St Barbe Museum/Art Gallery in Lymington and thought our PEDAS members might be interested. It’s called Planting Ideas and runs until the 16th March. The exhibition takes you through the process of collecting, preserving and cataloguing plants, featuring historic specimens and local New Forest fauna. That might sound boring to some but the botanic art is good and includes screen printing and photography. One bonus I discovered was a painting by Sven Berlin of gypsies sorting flowers. The museum itself proved interesting too detailing the history of Lymington and the New Forest Coast with its salt works, smuggling, and boat building. To get to the gallery you have to walk through The Old School Cafe and, if you can resist the delicious offerings, entry to the exhibition is £5. |

Then we shall all have the chance to be inspired by a piece of music. Please bring plenty of cheap sketching paper, preferably decent sized sheets but don't worry if you don't have any. I'll bring some. You won't be asked to produce a finished piece of work on the day. I'll be giving you some good Italian art paper to take home to work on. LONDON RA – Impressionists on Paper, Sunday 25 February 2024 - £25.00 Dear all, By popular demand I am doing a coach trip on the above date to London to visit the above exhibition at the RA. It will be coach only and will be your responsibility to purchase in advance, your own entry ticket to the exhibition. Although they have informed me you can buy on the door and it is the same price £19.00. With the trains being so unreliable at the moment it will be a treat to have almost door to door service. An early response would be good then I will have an idea if we can go ahead. If for any reason I do not get enough people, I will of course refund all the moneys paid. Carole Gadsby |

PEDAS100
Your chance to get a piece of artwork on the Gallery wall at Poole Lighthouse.
So, it has finally arrived, 2024, the year of the Centenary of the formation of Poole and East Dorset Art Society.
I’m looking forward to it immensely and I hope as many as possible of our Members can get involved in the exciting events we have planned for the occasion.
One of those events is an exhibition from 17th June to 29th July at the Lighthouse in Poole and we will be looking to you, our Members, to nominate the works to be exhibited. Work for exhibition will be independently selected from photographs, by Julie Herring and a curator from Lighthouse.
Some of the exhibits will be historical, by former members, covering all of the 100 years, but most space will be for more contemporary pieces. We want it to represent the very best of what PEDAS can produce.
Details are not fully worked up yet but what we’d like you all to think about is what should go in to the selection. There are really just two categories:
All of the selected pieces will be delivered by their owner/nominee to Lighthouse, just before the exhibition and picked up afterwards. This is not a selling exhibition.
I think that all sounds exciting but it will be a challenge to get it all together, tracking down pieces of art, agreeing the loans, writing a story line for some pieces and their authors etc….., and all by June. So if you would like to get involve in making it happen, please get in touch with me.

Art on the Tearoom walls
Something from Liz - request for submissions for Art for the tearoom walls "We are pleased to say that two out of the three paintings we hung in the tearooms have now been sold, so we'll be having a changeover at the end of January. For safety reasons, the work must be on unframed canvas or in light coloured frames with NO GLASS. Very approximate dimensions to be: 1) Landscape: 34 ins x up to 24 ins 2) Portrait: 20 ins x16 ins 3) Portrait: 30 ins x 24 ins The paintings can be of any subject. Selection will be by members of the Gallery Upstairs Committee. Hanging will be by means of a tightly strung cord attached to D rings. As they will not be screwed to the wall we cannot guarantee their security from theft. The paintings will be changed over at roughly two monthly intervals unless sold before. Art on the Tearoom tables - 'Table Posters'
Something from Steph - request for submissions. "The 'table posters' displayed in the tearooms below the Gallery Upstairs are proving very popular, so please keep your pictures coming in. It's a great way to show your artwork and advertise the gallery. Email me stephjones386@gmail.com with your pictures for table posters." |
Review of December's Open Exhibition
The purpose of the Open exhibition was to raise the profile of the Gallery Upstairs and Upton Country Park. At a well-attended Launch Party, Councilor Andy Martin formally opened the exhibition, while the selector, Roger dell Seddon, carefully explained his decisions as he awarded the prizemoney. First Prize went to Neil Luckett. Other prizewinners were: Polly Moore, Sue Smith, Sally Holland, Emma Sophie, Simon Merry, Elaine Bell, Max Furneaux. There were plenty of comments about how good the exhibition looked. We felt it all went smoothly considering the behind the scenes complexities and it was especially nice to receive grateful comments from those participating. Regarding feedback, some said the Jotform was clunky, while others commented on how good it was. There were some minor stewarding issues, but compared to previous years it all ran very smoothly. Unfortunately artwork sales aren't great in the current climate. Greetings cards are proving very popular. Some figures: Money in from fees: £696, prizemoney paid out: £400, artwork sold: £480, greetings card sales: £390, commission to GUS: £48, other outgoings to Jotform and publicity. Visitors: 812. |

Liz's List - compiler needed.
After countless years of giving us the definitive 'What's On' of local exhibitions, Liz has finally decided to step back and give someone else the opportunity to compile the list. If you think you could be the person for this interesting little job, please let us know, email: publicity@pedas.org.uk . It would only be needed once every 2 or 3 months - at your convenience. |

To all PEDAS members. Here’s hoping that 2024 will be a fantastic year for us all!
Sunday afternoon session
Lilliput Church Hall, The Church of the Holy Angels, BH14 8JX Please arrive in good time for 2.30 start, finish 4.30 7 January - Helen Talbot will lead the session 'Celebrate!'. BMOYC. PEDAS Dorset Art Weeks exhibition 2024 is entitled 'Celebrate!'. Helen will be supporting us in developing our ideas and artwork. This will be an important exhibition for PEDAS members as it will be our participation in the well-publicised Dorset Art Weeks in 2024, AND it will be our members exhibition for our Centenary year. As a member, please do not miss this opportunity to participate. This is why we have asked Helen to get involved in helping and guiding us throughout the process. We kicked this project off in December, when Helen held a brainstorming session to help us get the creative juices flowing. It was an eye opener and incredibly inspiring. If you missed the session, Helen has kindly sent us a precis of the work she had prepared for us. Click here |
A note from Liz to say thank you to those who submitted photos for DAW publicity. We feel the two we have chosen are especially eye-catching. The others might be used in other publications.

To all PEDAS members.

Hello everyone and I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas period. Just a few messages to introduce the year ahead.
Firstly, its January, so, you will find full details for the renewal of your membership in this bulletin. In addition, as a Charity, we are launching a Gift Aid scheme. This will bring us real financial benefits, so please sign up if you pay tax. With no impact on you, this will help our Society enormously.
Particularly as we enter our 100th birthday year, we will be funding a lot of activities for members and our communities as the year progresses. Additional funds that we are eligible for as a charity will be immensely helpful to all of us.
On the subject of Centenary, we are already offering you two opportunities for participation in the events of the year:
I look forward with excitement to the year ahead with PEDAS!

PS. Oh, and do not forget the all important AGM on 3th March, will it have a Centenary theme?

Gift Aid could bring in extra money for PEDAS from the Inland Revenue.
When you fill out your Membership Renewal Form - take the opportunity to help the club by filling in the Gift Aid form at the same time (above).
Members of PEDAS can help the club financially with no cost to themselves by simply agreeing to Gift Aid their annual Membership subscription.
Our Treasurer, Pam Marshall has been looking into the use of Gift Aid to gain extra income for the club, and it’s all above board! It’s the same system charity shops use when you make a purchase.
With the current membership subscription at £35 a year, each member who registers for Gift Aid with their annual membership form, will enable us to claim an additional income of £8.75 from the Inland Revenue.
So, even if only 50 members take the opportunity it will provide the club with an additional sum of over £400 each year. And it can be back dated 4 years, to when PEDAS became a charity.
This invaluable extra income would provide the club with more financial stability and would be used to provide more and better tutorial experiences for our members.
So, who can claim Gift Aid and who can’t?
Anyone who pays tax can claim Gift Aid.
You can earn £12,570 a year before you start paying tax.
If you pay only a tiny amount of tax, less than the £8.75 to be claimed by PEDAS, you could be liable to pay back the difference to the Inland Revenue. If you are in doubt, you should not sign up for Gift Aid. Even if you only earn £50 more than the allowance, you will be paying more than £8.75 in tax.
So, any Member of PEDAS who does pay tax, PLEASE sign up for Gift Aid and earn your club some extra income.
John Biggs, President of PEDAS

week commencing 18th December 2023
Note from the Chair
On behalf of the Trustees and other Committee members, I would like to wish you all an enjoyable festive season with family and friends and a happy and healthy 2024!
Our activities and programmes have finished for another year and I hope you have all been able to participate to a greater or lesser extent during 2023. Please never forget that you can always send us feedback, suggestions and/or ideas through the suggestion box on the website. This will help us to respond with topics and activities that we know you are interested in.
Well, PEDAS has a big birthday in 2024! We have a varied and super special programme throughout the year, starting with our members' Centenary Dinner in April. We still need some bookings to reach our required numbers so please consider participating if you have not yet made up your mind. Early in the New Year we will be publishing the planned programme for the year to our members.
Meanwhile, we start our activities again with our Sunday meeting on 7th January. Helen Talbot was amazingly helpful last week when she held a brainstorming session on different creative ways to interpret Celebrate! Just a reminder - this is the title for our first exhibition of the year when we will be participating in Dorset Art Week. If you missed the meeting last Wednesday, I suggest you don't miss the Sunday follow up in the New Year. Helen is a mine of creative ideas!
Lastly, another important date for your diary is the AGM on 3rd March.
I am immensely looking forward to next year and to all the activities we have planned. Several groups have been working hard on this programme for a long time now - to such an extent that we can not believe its almost here!
I look forward to seeing all of you in the new year, I'm sure it is going to be a good one for everyone!
Happy Christmas

PEDAS Christmas Party 2023 Reviewed
A big thankyou to everyone who attended the party on Sunday 3rd December. A lot more people came than we have had in the last year or two, or three! I’m sure a good time was had by all and there are lots of photos circulating on PEDAS@Home to show this. We planned to hold a Pictionary game, but somehow never got round to it! Our time was well occupied with clever quizzes and limericks to write, all done while we dined on our shared feast. The Tombola raised over £86, all of which will be donated to the Poole based Forest Home Hospice. I would like to thank all members for mucking in and making the event such an enjoyable one, and in particular the following people: Pam and David Marshall who had shopping to do and quizzes to compile! Pat Burnham and Susan Hawes for running the Tombola – a complete sell out! David Roberts for the musical entertainment – which encouraged a bit of dancing! Barry for the limerick competition and Liz who gallantly planned the elements for the Pictionary, which was never used! Time flies when you are enjoying yourself. Just a tempting word about next year – special party for our special year!? Rumour has it there may be a panto!! Jacqui Gush |

It has been a long journey, which started with the discussions at the last AGM.
Following an open invitation, many members submitted ideas, which were received with gratitude. As no overall agreement was forthcoming, the Trustees decided to engage a professional graphic designer. This was the brief to him based on the agreed outcomes (minuted) from the AGM:
- We wish to have a logo which incorporates the full name of the Society with sufficient emphasis, as well as the designed acronym (existing logo). POOLE & EAST DORSET ART SOCIETY
- We wish to update the existing logo, PEDAS. Members are not keen to change it completely but it needs a re-fresh and an update.
- We do not want the result to be complicated as it needs to be transferable and applicable in different marketing and communications contexts. A clean shape is preferable.
- We wish to incorporate the words of the website home page; Learn.Create.Exhibit.
- If it fits, we would also like to include ‘Est.1924’.
As a result, we have recently agreed on the following logo:
This will now be replacing the old logo on all our documentation and communication. It allows for a shortened icon where appropriate.
This is great timing as we will be able to use the new logo as part of our Centenary publicity.

Opportunity to hire The Gallery Upstairs
There is still some space in the Gallery Upstairs early next year, this would be a great opportunity for some of you to share your work with more space than you get in a Pedas exhibition. If you like this idea, you could band with other Pedas members or contacts from outside Pedas to share the space, as well as sharing the cost and the stewarding. There are slots of one or two weeks between 31st January and 5th March. January and February at a reduced price of £12 a day, £18 in March. If you are interested please contact Liz: lizziemagee4@gmail.com. |
Review of a Feeling for Art
Thank you again to everyone involved in the exhibition – we particularly appreciated seeing new faces helping with hanging etc. It was a lovely looking exhibition. We were visited by over 1183 people. Sales were slightly up on our previous exhibition. Artwork sales totaled £1105. Greetings card sales: £404. Five framed works and ten browser pieces were sold. So well done to all involved. |

Two New Trustees
"I am very pleased to be able to tell members that both Freda Rhodes and David Marshall have agreed to join our group of Trustees.
The Constitution states that we can appoint new Trustees at any time. However, they will be formally appointed at the AGM next March. This will give them time to settle in and become more familiar with the role of a committee member or Trustee.
I'm sure all our members will join me in thanking them for giving PEDAS more of their time and wishing them well going forward."

Wednesday afternoon session
Alderney Manor Community Centre, 287 Herbert Ave BH12 4HT Time: 2 pm - 4 pm 18 October - Loosening up; from figurative to unresolved, with Roger Dell Seddon Using Seascapes as the basis for this workshop, join Roger in exploring ways to create atmosphere, movement and the illusion of complexity when portraying the ever-changing elements of air, wind and water. Beforehand, if time allows, check out Turner's numerous oil, watercolour and gouache sketches made in the 1830's which are held to be the finest and most sublime representations of these elements, and the precursor of impressionism. Suitable for oil, acrylic and watercolourists. Materials List: Bring a sketchbook to draft out ideas and concepts. Bring charcoal, pencil and sketch paper. Also, pads of oil or acrylic painting paper/canvas, available from many on-line suppliers and locally at the Range at modest cost. Ideal sizes A3 and A4. Watercolour pads or loose sheets of the same or similar size. A limited range of pigments. As a minimum I suggest, warm and cool examples of blue, red and yellow. Titanium white, yellow ochre and Burnt Umber. Brushes of various types and sizes ( Nothing too precious. Leave your sables at home). Watercolourists will need Chinese White in addition to other colours to create opacity. |
Oil painters will use their usual medium and low odour high flashpoint or non inflammable solvent. Rags or paper to clean brushes and a waste bag to take home and dispose of afterwards.
Also, bring your imagination and memory of a coastal scene which is well known to you. No photograph references please. Only sketches. Roger Seddon | Landscape, coastal & marine artist based in Poole, Dorset. (rogerseddonart.co.uk) |

I have a solo show on and thought I should tell PEDAS, in case anyone is interested. This is at the Forest Arts Centre, New Milton, until the 16th Oct. It's closed on Tuesdays and possibly other days, but open some evenings. Best to check before travelling. I've included some experimental work, so there should be something interesting! Sunday afternoon session
Lilliput Church Hall, The Church of the Holy Angels, BH14 8JX Please arrive in good time for 2.30 start, finish 4.30 1 October - Sarah McDonald Mark making in Abstract Art We will be exploring the variety of marks that can be produced with 4-6 different brushes, with oil pastel, crayon or charcoal depending on personal preference. Suggested materials: Primed/gesso-ed paper/board on which to work, size is up to personal preference, but not too large, pencils/biro, pencil crayons/oil or other pastels, charcoal (may need fixative). Collage material if using with cutting mat and craft knife or scissors. Brushes, 4-6 as different as possible. Rollers are good. It might be useful if members also brought along some tools that they can use to make marks in wet paint. Sarah uses old biros that have run out of ink, a hair comb, a wooden kebab skewer, ends of paint brushes can work well, in fact anything to scratch into wet paint. Members could bring along an old credit or bank card to use, or if they have one a silicone dough scraper, these are good to produce a background on which to work, collage could also be incorporated. Sarah's examples are in acrylic paint, although gouache could work well as an alternative. Sarah McDonald (@sarahjmcdonaldart) • Instagram |

A Feeling for Art
As Summer rapidly fades into Autumn, this is a reminder that our regular PEDAS exhibition slot in October is fast approaching. With the summer holidays behind us and the kids back at school, now is an excellent time to turn our attention to our art practice. Indeed, if your holidays are still to come, it is even more important to be reminded that our next exhibition runs from 13th- 30th October. For some reason, of late we seem to have been experiencing a significant reduction in entries for PEDAS exhibitions, and reviewing my visits to other exhibitions, this seems to be in stark contrast to other art societies. Why? I wonder. Let me take this opportunity to urge you to participate in the forthcoming exhibition and let me again remind members that your art society is very lucky and privileged to have the facility of the Gallery Upstairs, allowing members to exhibit work at least twice a year in PEDAS exhibitions with no additional cost for room hire, and no requirement for selection. The theme, ‘A feeling for Art’, places absolutely no constraints on your ideas and creativity and can be applied to any work that you may wish to exhibit. A request from Wendy Read about volunteering at Inside Out Dorset:
You may already be familiar with Inside Out Dorset. It’s an outdoor arts festival that brings exceptional experiences and extraordinary events to some of Dorset’s most remarkable urban and rural spots. This year the festival takes place 15th – 24th September and events are happening at Moors Valley Country Park, Wimborne, Poole, Bere Regis and Weymouth. All events are free to attend.
Volunteers are at the heart of making the festival happen and we are looking for volunteers to fill a range of roles and shifts. l wondered if any of your PEDAS members might be interested in helping us out? We would love to get as many people as possible involved in these special events and everyone is welcome.
Our website has full details of what’s on and on volunteering: Inside Out Dorset - Activate (activateperformingarts.org.uk)
If are able to spread the word, I would be really grateful.
Thank you so much for your help.

Note from Joy
Travel Light and Travel by Bus I want to highlight that it is often possible to get to the PEDAS plein air by bus. Yes you might get there a bit later than others but it gives independence from getting a lift and definitely feels like a day out. It also cuts down all that unnecessary equipment that we all take just in case and helps hone in to use one medium. It can be a relief not to drive and face the busy summer traffic. So with all that in mind I am looking forward to our trip to Hamworthy this Thursday. Joy Gow |
A word from the Chair
Summer activities are in full swing, and I hope members are enjoying the season. PEDAS continues to offer a good summer agenda which enables you to meet up with like-minded colleagues and friends, and keep your hand in with art activities, as well as visiting lovely venues when En Plein Air. It would be really nice to see a few more of you joining in. We understand that everyone is out of their routine during July and August, and I am the first to observe an inability to keep to regular activities over this period as I seem to be out and about so much. However, do keep an eye on this newsletter to find out what is going on and please join in where possible. These arrangements are made for you, our member to enjoy and benefit from. Perhaps diarise a few art activities, PEDAS initiated or otherwise, and meet up with other people you haven’t seen for some time. We apologise that we had to cancel Valerie Willett’s Sunday session on 6th August, owing to a last minute dose of Covid. Fortunately, Valerie is now fully recovered. |
I would like to thank those few of you who participated in this year’s Art Pro Loco event. We loved seeing you, either to exhibit your artwork and/or to come along to join in with the event. The weather wasn’t too bad for most of the time – well, it was as good as it gets this summer! In addition, (in most cases it was the same people), I would like to thank those who kindly gave of their time to offer a workshop and/ or demonstration that the public could join in with. Although it seemed that the Park was not overly busy, those who participated certainly enthusiastically enjoyed what was on offer.
Art Pro Loco prizes were duly awarded in 3 age categories, (we received a majority of adult entries this year), and all 3 winners were absolutely delighted. Liz’s granddaughter was a winner!! It was very satisfactory to see their delight and all prizes were so well deserved. Just a pity that not more PEDAS members could participate, hence Barry’s cartoon below … You will be receiving full details of the forthcoming Autumn programme soon, when we will be back indoors at Alderney, on a Wednesday afternoon. News from the Committees - August 2023
Committee
Committee
- Our yearly report for 2022 was successfully submitted to the Charity Commission in August
- Gift Aid, good progress has been made and we will hear from HMRC when approval has been granted to proceed
- We are delighted to report that we have received several enquiries from people interested in knowing more about membership to our group
- Feedback from the Art Pro Loco, those who took part appeared to enjoy the experience albeit the weather was not good, and prize-winners were delighted with their rewards. There was some disappointment at the lack of membership take-up which meant less artwork on display and steward availability. Jacqui Gush would like to thank all who participated, gave demos, stewarded, engaged with the public etc
- Some additional information about PEDAS has been placed in The Gallery Upstairs, in the Walled Garden and adjacent to the gallery access staircase in the clip-frame
- Publicity is underway for both the upcoming exhibitions in The Gallery Upstairs as well as discussion on publicity to inform about our centenary planning
- Pat Burnham is working through the archive to identify early artist members in order to find out what paintings by them are homed at Poole Museum for display at our centenary exhibition in 2025, this is a work in progress. Julie Herring will curate the exhibition
- PEDAS has an archivist – Steve Smith (formerly Archivist for The College, Poole) has taken up the role for the Society
- The last en plein air date is Thursday 7th September, 2023
- The Wednesday sessions will start on 13th September, 2023 and the programme will be finalised soon but include Still Life, Colour Mixing, Ways of Looking, Life Drawing etc. www.pedas.org.uk/wednesday-afternoons

Jan K: "In my early days of PEDAS and, as my very first encounter with John approached, the late, Richard Price described him as a wonderful, talented artist and friend with the comic delivery of Eddie Izzard. This I found to be true and during the many subsequent tutorials and talks his unique style always made me smile. A truly memorable character and a great loss to all."
Barbara Woods: "John and I go way back, having been colleagues at Bournemouth and Poole College of FE long before my PEDAS days. I remember going to his sessions for staff to appreciate the College’s Art Collection. I also had the privilege of exhibiting his paintings during my time promoting art exhibitions.
I have such fond memories of John and Diana on our many PEDAS holidays visiting wonderful places and art galleries in Paris, Amsterdam, The Hague, Barcelona etc. John was always so generous of his time, giving insight into the works of art to which he introduced us. I also remember that we didn’t have a sitter on one of our Sunday PEDAS sessions when John was doing a pastel portrait demonstration so I quickly volunteered. I shall always treasure the resulting portrait.
Finally, I will remember John as one of the most inspirational and much loved people you could wish to meet. He was kind and thoughtful and always interested in anything you had to say.
Fondest memories then John and best wishes to Diana and family."
Val T: "What a sad month.
Recent PEDAS members possibly won’t realize what an integral role John had in the club. His critiques of our exhibitions were always hotly anticipated – I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to hold their breath as he approached one of their paintings to find out just what he thought of it, suggestions for improvement as well as praise being just as welcome.
I used to love the full day workshops that he would arrange in the summer and always signed up as soon as they were announced. Nothing was too much trouble and tips and encouragement flowed throughout the day. Likewise the holidays when he would take us round the highlights of the many art galleries and museums we visited. As with everything else he did, they were always immaculately prepared and delivered with such enthusiasm.
I have one of John’s lovely Corfe Castle paintings hanging in the living room – a wonderful reminder of a truly gentle man."
Marisa: "After I finished a course of (CAD) Computer Aided Design, at the Poole College, I was encouraged by a friend doing a Flexistudy at the time to do an Art one. I did not know anything about paints or Artist, but I enrolled in a "A" level course of Art.
The tutors, Jem Mane and John Bowen. After that, I had many other, some small some a year long curses, with John.
He was a wonderful tutor, kind and ever there, to help you if your leg was wrong or your head was out of proportion (the model, that is). So, I am very very sorry for his demise, I will miss his classes and good advises, him for all the help that gave me, and others in his courses, and I will have him in my heart for ever. (Que en Paz descanse) dear John."
Suki: "I never met a person so kind as John. I first met John was about 40 years ago. I was a student at art college in Wallisdown and I attended a short life drawing class by John in the evening. I left a pencil case in his class and I forgot about it. A couple days later John himself brought it to me. I was amazed and couldn't believe how kind he was. John was a wonderful art teacher as well, he listened to us and gave us the best advice. I'll never forget him. Thank you John."
Robin: "I enjoyed listening to John's talks. He made them very interesting and informative, with a touch of humour. His honesty with critiques was most helpful and that glint of fun in his eye will always be remembered."
Andrew: “I am grateful to John for so much. His skill and virtuosity with any medium in any circumstance. His wit and spontaneity, his capacity to turn any disaster into a positive bonus.
He employed me at North Road College in the early 90s where I taught life drawing, A’ level art and A’ level graphics students, and where I had the opportunity to teach many of that generation of PEDAS, including Norma and Liz, who with John, and others, turned around the fortunes of the society, making it the success it is today. I then took over from him teaching life drawing in the evenings at Wallisdown, which led to the opportunity of working with Animation and Graphics degree students on some days. As my friend and mentor, I shall always be indebted to him for his kindness, support, and encouragement. I learned so much from him, and will be forever grateful.”
Judith L: “I remember the wonderful London gallery trips led by John and preceded by a slide show at the Lighthouse. A good few years ago but truly inspirational."
Dawn: “I have always appreciated John's paintings and his even handed approach to his critiques at Broadstone Art Society.
He was such a sport and even sang with me, "Oh yes, I remember it well" at a PEDAS Party! We had great fun painting
yards and yards of ceiling paper for the Panto... the garage floor became a Yellow Brick road!! I have great admiration for his bringing Diana to the PEDAS AGM and later giving a talk and slide show of his life as an artist.
John was a modest, sincere and wonderful man...he will be a hard act to follow as a President.”
Sue S: "Just so sad we should lose two such wonderful members of PEDAS within weeks of each other. I hope you don't mind but John Bowen was known to members of Pelhams Art Club, and others of course, and Colin Cripps wrote the following to me on hearing the sad news..
" John was such a great teacher and an extremely nice man who conducted several workshops for us in the past, including one on portraiture and another in which he took us all through an art school term in one workshop, starting with a still life, we had to draw his beekeeping equipment. He was taught by the great Peter Greenham RA who once got John to draw his creased shirt hanging on the door, which John said was excellent practise. We will miss him. Colin""

Penny W: "They, both John & Dorothy, always had time to say hello and greeted me with a big smile. Lovely people who will be remembered by us all."
Sue S: "And our dear lovely Dorothy...
Dorothy I will always remember you with total affection and also a great smile on my face. We had such fun in recent years when we went on our little painting holidays. Firstly to Venice, when seven of us hired a flat for a week and painted en plain air and all the locals came and chatted to us. Then our long weekend in the little cottage at Tiptoe in the New Forest, when we had such fun playing Balderdash, we will never forget that! And lastly only last summer when you came with us to Lake Garda painting for a week. Such fond memories, we miss you lots."
Val T: "I knew Dorothy before I joined PEDAS and she was always so enthusiastic and engaged with everything we did, whether it was another art group or an art holiday – I particularly remember one that several of us enjoyed in Zakynthos. She was already a member of the PEDAS Committee when I joined the club and persuaded me to join too. I remember committee meetings at her house trying to avoid the attentions of her crazy black cat!"
Jan K: "Dorothy was a lovely, talented lady who, for me, epitomised PEDAS. Always encouraging and generous with her time and knowledge with a friendly and pleasant disposition that made it a pleasure to be a part of the many evening and summer sessions she attended. She will be very much missed."
Norma: "Dorothy was a beautiful lady inside and out. Her art was also beautiful in fact I can’t imagine anything ugly associated with her. I remember our holidays she would sit on deck elegant and with poise even when she had a drink or two. Again in our Pantomimes, always the lady, even in a peasant’s costume. I have known Dorothy for a great number of years she was or always seemed so happy her smile lit up the room. I know art made her happy and joining Pedas was one her favourite things. I am sad she is no longer here to light up our lives."
Caroline: "I would describe Dorothy as fun loving but always level headed. Whilst she was on the PEDAS Committee I would go to her home and share time putting the Newsletter into their envelopes. This time was full of interesting and lively chat
Once when we were painting en plein at the Mill at Sturminster Newton we thought we had chosen a shady area, but one where we had a good view. However, somehow we attracted a swarm of flies and however much we tried to escape they followed us where ever we moved our easel. Dorothy just kept on laughing. Dorothy was a lovely lady and full of grace."
Suki: "I really liked Dorothy who was always smiling and very kind. Last time I saw her was in Edinburgh with PEDAS members. She was very happy and she said to me how she enjoyed it. I am very glad I went there so I got to know her better but she has gone! I'll remember her forever."
Jacqui G: "Message for Dorothy. To a personal friend as well as a PEDAS colleague who carried her pain and suffering with positivity and always with a smile on her lovely face."
Sarah P: "I was so sad to hear about Dorothy's death. I had telephoned her a few weeks ago just to catch up as I didn't know she was ill because I haven't been to PEDAS for quite a while. I remember her kindness in inviting me to join her bunch of friends on our PEDAS trip to Amsterdam before we went - and that meant a lot. You all know how lovely and sweet she was - and so plucky dashing off to paint abroad. With love."
