“Eclectic” is rather an overused word when it comes to describing exhibitions, but having looked up the definition “deriving ideas, style or taste from a broad range of sources,” it seems to be the perfect word for describing “Art in to View”, our latest exhibition at The Gallery Upstairs.
On display were bold oil paintings, gentle water colours, charmingly innocent depictions of nature, precise prints, the striking use of shading in pen, impressive collage, a perfect demonstration of that difficult medium oil pastel, poured paint, beautiful pencil work, and some welcome abstract work. Subjects covered land and seascapes, boats and trains, architecture, gardens, flowers, foxes, hens and horses, runners and even breakfast. So if you haven't yet seen "Art in to View" at The Gallery Upstairs these are the last few days to come and enjoy the latest work by PEDAS artists. Open every day, finishes Monday. We'd love you to join us on Saturday 16th October from 11 am for drinks and nibbles and to celebrate the launch of the latest PEDAS exhibition:
‘Art in to View’ New and original work in an un-themed exposition by members of Poole & East Dorset Art Society. Work ranges from traditional to abstract, finely detailed to colourful and strident. 'I love texture especially when used to evoke the archaic and although I have a reasonably well established route into a painting the actual mark making process of its growth is more intuitive than deliberative, more unconscious than conscious.' He will be doing a demonstration for us on Thursday, showing his interpretation of the reed banks in Christchurch harbour. If you like needlework you will love the exhibition currently on show at The Gallery Upstairs until 13th September. It is a sumptuous display of textile art by Dorset members of West Country Embroiderers in an exhibition called ‘A Spectrum of Stitch’. Christchurch, Poole, Purbeck, Sherborne, Wareham and Wimborne groups are represented. Each group gets together on a regular basis to enjoy learning and experimenting with hand and machine embroidery, fibres and mixed media. The original aim was to encourage the skill of embroidery at all levels and ability, but they have since moved on and now, as demonstrated in this fabulous exhibition, like to encompass all manner of textiles and needlecrafts. Some interesting pieces: And the exhibition that follows this promises to be another feast for the eyes. ‘Optic Nerve’, which runs from 17th – 27th September, showcases the paintings of four contrasting artists: Rob Adams, Pam Marshall, Sally Holland, and Heather MacGregor. Full details are available at www.thegalleryupstairs.co.uk under News and Events Dawn Goodson celebrates her 90th birthday this year with a retrospective exhibition of her work in a variety of media - paintings in oil, watercolour, pastel, screen prints, sculpture, ceramics. All money raised from the sale of her work will be donated to the local branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. This vibrant exhibition is open now and will run until 2nd August. We know that nothing phases Dawn. She recently performed a Wing Walk at the Bournemouth Air Show; has abseiled down the Portsmouth Spinnaker Tower; gone down the Velocity 2 Zip Wire in Wales headfirst at 100 mph – all in aid of MNDA charity to help raise funds for those affected by Motor Neurone Disease. The Gallery Upstairs is full of Dawn's work. There are portfolio pieces, studies and prints to browse through and of course her vibrant Chinese watercolour paintings on different types of papers - a skill that Dawn has generously demonstrated to PEDAS members at our Thursday evening sessions. Over her long and interesting life Dawn has spent many years living and teaching overseas and this has had a clear influence on her work. Equally evident is work inspired by the Dorset landscape. So we do hope you find the time to come and enjoy a visit to Upton Country Park in the glorious sunshine, pop into the Gallery, meet Dawn and support this worth cause.
