PEDAS Autumn Exhibition "HOLDING THE MOMENT" 14 – 31 October 2022 "To me, painting holds the moment in the way that a photograph never does. If you paint or draw whether its en plein air or in the studio, you remember where you were, what you felt, who came and talked to you, the dog that came and drank your water, the struggles you had with the painting." - Liz Magee 'ART INTO FOOD' Auction of Paintings If you like Art and want to find a pre-Christmas bargain - whilst helping support a good cause - come to the auction at Gather, Poole Dolphin Centre, Saturday 5th November. Raising money for ‘Waste Not Want Not’
Jacqui Gush (PEDAS Chair) says "Waste Not Want Not is run by a lovely lady called Erika. It was started in 2015 by two dedicated people, now in their 80's. I spent an hour there and I have to say their set up is impressive. They operate as a supermarket to members, of which they have 597. They have 36 volunteers and are well supported by local supermarkets. However, they also look after their members and now offer other support and training including cooking skills, mental health support, eating on a budget and they give away cooking equipment, perfect for bedsits which has been donated. I should add that they also support an increasing number of Ukranian refugees - all with very sad stories, and even have leaflets printed in Ukrainian.” Erika will be on hand at the auction to talk about the charity. So, if you like Art and are interested in finding a bargain whilst helping a good cause come to the auction at Gather, 5th November, start time 11 am. If you’re an artist who would like to donate some of your work to help those in need, bring your work along from 9am. 'In My Life' is an exhibition of diverse and thought-provoking work is currently showing at the Gallery Upstairs, Upton Country Park as part of Dorset Art Weeks. ‘In My Life' is inspired by something that happened in the artists’ lifetimes and preferably to the artists themselves personally, and features the work of members Poole and East Dorset Art Society (PEDAS). Artists have always used themselves, their history, and their families as inspiration for their work, telling stories about events that happened in their lives or something exclusive to them. It could be an emotional, social or entertaining event, the 2008 banking crisis, a special holiday, an adventure. Something that is always there in the memory and inevitably comes to mind on certain occasions. Jackson Pollock famously said “Every good painter paints what (s)he is.” Liz Magee will be exhibiting her painting ‘Walled Garden’. She says “Naturally, my family has always been a focus in my life. In this painting I wanted to depart from naturalism in a quest for richer happier colours without being garish. I wanted to aim at finding a richness in pattern too. I like to think the walled garden symbolises the protection I feel for my family and playing in the garden projects happiness.” 'In My Life' is open daily until 30th May. The Gallery Upstairs is located above the tearooms in the lovely surroundings of Upton Country Park. For more information visit www.thegalleryupstairs.org.uk; email gus@pedas.org.uk. For list of forthcoming exhibitions see Exhibitions - THE GALLERY UPSTAIRS The Gallery is managed by PEDAS (Poole & East Dorset Art Society).

"Neat Image" is an exciting combination of photographs, sculpture and poetry written in response to both disciplines. Add to that a couple of cabinets of very affordable jewellery and an opportunity for anyone any age to add a drawing or a poem to the exhibition and you have a very good reason to visit The Gallery Upstairs. Escape the grey of winter days and take a trip to the Gallery Upstairs where a colourful new art exhibition is currently showing in the freshly spruced up gallery. Enjoy new and original works by the 'Inside Out Painters' who are: Chris Clark, Gill Faraway, Sarah Kelly & Iris McCrow with guest artists David Herrington and Elizabeth Mitchener (printermaker). The exhibition finishes 15 February 2022 Chris Clark paints mainly in acrylic but also mixed media, watercolour and oils. She enjoys both plein air painting and studio work. Gill Faraway is particularly interested in conveying atmosphere and a feeling for colour in her work and finds watercolour is ideal for depicting our English climate and changing seasons. She has recently enjoyed painting with acrylic paint and palette knife, giving a free and impressionistic feel to her work. "Sarah Kelly says: "being in my sea kayak out along our incredible coastline as well as further west and abroad, has given me much of my inspiration for painting and helped me to be able to 'read' the water and revel in the sky. Getting back into sailing recently has given me a new viewpoint and a greater understanding of the sea, and a chance to develop my artwork further". Iris McCrow Growing up in this area gave Iris lots of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, something she continues to do. Painting en plein air is her first love, and reflected in the work on show. David Herrington usually works with watercolour and Acrylics depending on the subject and mood he is wanting to capture. His art continues to evolve in different directions and he is always experimenting with new ideas and subjects to create original and exciting artwork. Elizabeth Mitchener is a printmaker creating detailed carefully designed images of the natural world which reward close perusal. |
